I?ve always said that personal development and growth is like repotting a plant. ?If you think of yourself as the plant, the pot and the soil would be your environment. ?In order for plants to grow, they need to be gradually moved into larger pots once they reach a certain size. ?If they?re not moved, their roots will reach their maximum size for the given pot, become cramped, and then stop growing. ?No matter how much potential there is for the plant to grow, without a bigger pot, it simply cannot grow anymore.
So, if you want a bigger plant, there will come a time when it must be moved to a bigger pot. ?It?s not a simple and easy switch though. ?Well, it may be from our point of view, but from the plant?s, it?s a very stressful time. ?The plant is exposed, the roots are exposed, the soil is getting changed, things are changing and the plant has to endure the process. ?Any time that I encounter a particularly difficult moment in my life, I think of it as a time of repotting. ?Hard times represent opportunities for growth as far as I?m concerned. ?But, knowing that doesn?t make them any less painful.
If the plant is going to survive the repotting process, it needs to be well cared for or it won?t make it. ?I believe that having the right environment is so critical to the growth process because of this very reason. ?Sometimes, as plants, we grow to the point where we need to be repotted. ?Other times, life has different plans for us and something comes along and just breaks out pot whether we are ready for it or not. ?If that happens and we get forced into a bigger pot when we?re not ready and when we don?t have a good support system, it could spell a particularly difficult time in our lives. ?If we can?t withstand the stress long enough to establish our roots and start the growth process, we?re in big trouble.
What I strive to do now is do what I can to make sure that when pots are changing in my life, they are changing on my terms. ?That means that I need to constantly going through personal growth, self improvement, etc. ?I used to think that those words were so cheesy but now they?re like a lifeline to my dreams and success. ?If I am to become the person that I dream to be and do the things that I envision for myself and my team, I need to be pushing myself to grow and change pots successfully time and time again. ?It?s a difficult, challenging, and painful process sometimes, but I know that it?s necessary. ?And in the end, the final result is exactly what I?ve wanted for myself all along.
