Female officers sent nude photos to general

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) ? Two female Army officers testified Wednesday they provided nude photos to a general facing sex crime charges.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (http://bit.ly/PDPXhc ) that the married captain testified that Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair repeatedly asked her to send him nude photos of herself, which she said made her uncomfortable. Eventually, she said she placated the married general by sending him downloaded pornographic photos that were digitally altered to add her face.

The testimony came during the third day of a hearing at Fort Bragg to determine whether Sinclair will go on trial for multiple criminal charges including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct and adultery, which is a crime under the military justice system. The allegations against Sinclair involve relationships with five women other than his wife.

Sinclair served as a deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan until he was relieved of his duties in May amid a criminal investigation and sent back to North Carolina.

On Tuesday, a second female captain testified that Sinclair, her direct superior, twice forced her to perform oral sex and threatened to kill her and her family if she told anyone. The woman had a 3-year affair with the married general at Army bases in the United States, Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Associated Press does not identify victims of alleged sexual assault or coercion.

The female captain who testified Wednesday said she and Sinclair did not have a sexual relationship and they had met in person only three times. Their relationship was primarily through emails, she said.

The military investigated the woman who testified Wednesday for adultery and fraternization, but she passed a polygraph test in connection with Sinclair. She received a letter of reprimand, but that is on hold and she was ordered to testify.

A female major also testified Wednesday that she sent photos of her breasts and a personal video to Sinclair.

The major said she had served as a company commander under Sinclair and that they became friends after they were no longer in the same chain of command.

The major said she sent photos of her breasts, before and after elective plastic surgery, to Sinclair. She also sent a video. The major testified she was punished by the Army and ordered to testify.

The major was investigated for adultery, took a polygraph test and passed it. But she was still punished for indecent acts.

Sinclair potentially faces penalties of up to life in prison if convicted at courts martial on the most serious charges. However, there is no minimum punishment or sentencing guidelines in the military court system, meaning the general could be convicted but not punished. He could also be forced to retire or reduced in rank.

Experts familiar with the military justice system have said it was unlikely Sinclair would receive considerable prison time if convicted.

Climate modeler identifies trigger for Earth's last big freeze

For more than 30 years, climate scientists have debated whether flood waters from melting of the enormous Laurentide Ice Sheet, which ushered in the last major cold episode on Earth about 12,900 years ago, flowed northwest into the Arctic first, or east via the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to weaken ocean thermohaline circulation and have a frigid effect on global climate.

Now University of Massachusetts Amherst geoscientist Alan Condron, with Peter Winsor at the University of Alaska, using new, high-resolution global ocean circulation models, report the first conclusive evidence that this flood must have flowed north into the Arctic first down the Mackenzie River valley. They also show that if it had flowed east into the St. Lawrence River valley, Earth's climate would have remained relatively unchanged.

"This episode was the last time the Earth underwent a major cooling, so understanding exactly what caused it is very important for understanding how our modern-day climate might change in the future," says Condron of UMass Amherst's Climate System Research Center. Findings appear in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Events leading up to the sharp climate-cooling period known as the Younger Dryas, or more familiarly as the "Big Freeze," unfolded after glacial Lake Agassiz, at the southern edge of the Laurentide ice sheet covering Hudson Bay and much of the Canadian Arctic, catastrophically broke through an ice dam and rapidly dumped thousands of cubic kilometers of fresh water into the ocean.

This massive influx of frigid fresh water injected over the surface of the ocean is assumed to have halted the sinking of very dense, saltier, colder water in the North Atlantic that drives the large-scale ocean circulation, the thermohaline circulation, that transports heat to Europe and North America. The weakening of this circulation caused by the flood resulted in the dramatic cooling of North America and Europe.

Using their high resolution, global, ocean-ice circulation model that is 10 to 20 times more powerful than previously attainable, Condron and Winsor compared how meltwater from the two different drainage outlets was delivered to the sinking regions in the North Atlantic. They found the original hypothesis proposed in 1989 by Wally Broecker of Columbia University suggesting that Lake Aggasiz drained into the North Atlantic down the St. Lawrence River would have weakened the thermohaline circulation by less than 15 percent.

Condron and Winsor say this level of weakening is unlikely to have accounted for the 1,000-year cold climate event that followed the meltwater flood. Meltwater from the St. Lawrence River actually ends up almost 1,900 miles (3,000 km) south of the deep water formation regions, too far south to have any significant impact on the sinking of surface waters, which explains why the impact on the thermohaline circulation is so minor.

By contrast, Condron and Winsor's model shows that when the meltwater first drains into the Arctic Ocean, narrow coastal boundary currents can efficiently deliver it to the deep water formation regions of the sub-polar north Atlantic, weakening the thermohaline circulation by more than 30 percent. They conclude that this scenario, showing meltwater discharged first into the Arctic rather than down the St. Lawrence valley, is "more likely to have triggered the Younger Dryas cooling."

Condron and Windor's model runs on one of the world's top supercomputers at the National Energy Research Science Computing Center in Berkeley, Calif. The authors say, "With this higher resolution modeling, our ability to capture narrow ocean currents dramatically improves our understanding of where the fresh water may be going."

Condron adds, "The results we obtain are only possible by using a much higher computational power available with faster computers. Older models weren't powerful enough to model the different pathways because they contained too few data points to capture smaller-scale, faster-moving coastal currents."

"Our results are particularly relevant for how we model the melting of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice sheets now and in the future. "It is apparent from our results that climate scientists are artificially introducing fresh water into their models over large parts of the ocean that freshwater would never have reached. In addition, our work points to the Arctic as a primary trigger for climate change. This is especially relevant considering the rapid changes that have been occurring in this region in the last 10 years."

My good friend Webster defines ?Ultimate? as ?the best or most extreme of its kind?. Needless to say that writing the Ultimate Guide to anything is no trivial task. But in this case it?s not too difficult, simply because of a loophole in the definition of the word. ?The best or most extreme of its kind? implies ?currently in existence?, and currently there is not much good information online with regard to this topic. Most (if not all) information online is bad, wrong or simply to basic to be useful. There are some good tips, but nothing that outlines a holistic, consistent, effective strategy to conducting and effective online job search. This article aims to do just that.

Truth be told I don?t really know if this is the ?Ultimate Guide to Conducting and Online Job Search? or not. The reason I put the word ?Ultimate? in the title is because adding that single word will likely double the readership of this article. It was put there for marketing reasons more than anything else, well sort of; it was actually put there to make a point about conducting a job search. That point being an online job search is an exercise in marketing, and marketing matters.

Some time ago, I decided I wanted to move into Sales Engineering, So (as per my article Managing your Career in IT)?I decided to shore up my sales skills (I already had solid engineering skills) and then convince management to officially move me into a Sales Engineer position. I already often helped out the sales team developing prototypes, proof of concepts and tagging along on sales calls as a ?Technical Expert?. Unfortunately I was too valuable an asset as Tech Lead & Project Manger, so I was shot down, and shortly thereafter I left the company. (See: So you want to be a Rock Star Developer? Maybe you should reconsider.) As part of my self training I read the book SPIN Selling (recommended by red-dirt in this now deleted question).? SPIN Selling, a book on sales, turned out to be hands down the best book on job searching I ever read!

The premise of the book is fairly straight forward, 1) there is a big difference on how you sell low end (low cost) products and high end (High cost) products 2) To sell high end products you really need a very targeted and often elongated sales process. Often you have to get through a gate keeper to reach the real decision maker, and then you need to understand what the real decision maker is looking for, and then target your pitch exactly to that. This turns out to be very similar to what you need to do when conducting an online job search. And this brings me to my second point of this article: Just like a book on sales can be a valuable reference to one conducting a job search, so too can your skills be used in a variety of ways, (hence the importance of choosing to learn transferable skills). So, you need to understand how your skills can be used, and more importantly how to explain the?transfer-ability?of the skills (to the skills your potential employer is looking for) in such a way that the gate keeper can effectively sell you to the decision maker. (Read that sentence again) How to do this will be extensively discussed in Parts II & III of this article.

Your online job search had two (overlapping) phases

1)????? Marketing: Finding and advertizing your self to potential Employers. This is everything you do up until you get a person on the phone discussing a specific opportunity

2)????? Sales: Direct contact with a potential employer where, building on your marketing, you sell yourself as the perfect candidate for the job.? (Unfortunately, in today?s job market beating out the competition is not enough; you need to be the perfect candidate). This is every thing you do from the moment you get a person on the phone discussing a specific opportunity and afterward.

Your Online Job Search ?Sales Process? should look something like this:

1)????? Marketing

1. Look for Markets -?ie. Research where (what roles\position\industries) that there are good opportunities for your skill set and will position you for growth.
2. Generate Leads based on your research
3. Qualify your Leads
4. Market to you Leads ? By sending a targeted Cover Letter & Resume
5. Get Responses
6. Qualify Responses
7. Postmortem

2)????? Sales

1. Develop\fine tune a targeted sales pitch for each response (These are no longer leads, These are now Opportunities)
2. Make first (direct) contact.
3. Recruiters\HR
4. Phone screen(s)
5. In Person Interview(s)
6. The Offer
7. Negotiation
8. Postmortem

The Marketing Phase is used to bring in leads, qualify those leads (eliminating the ones you aren?t interested in) and hopefully converting the few that you are into Opportunities. During the Sales Phase you focus on closing those opportunities. Each step in the above sales process has its own set of techniques and strategies. You need to constantly analyze the techniques and strategies you are using for each step and look for ways to improve upon them. This is particularly true if you change a strategy, you need to know if that change is working for or against you. Lastly if you are not happy with the conversion rate from one particular step to the next, you should be asking your self ?What am I doing wrong here and how can I improve on that??

So basically, I know that if I sent out 100 resumes to qualified leads, I would get about 20 call backs; I?d interview for about half of those, and wind up with 2-3 offers. I honestly don?t know how good this compares to the average; I simply have no statistics on it. But I will tell you this; my numbers have vastly improved by doing using the strategies and techniques I will describe in the next two parts of this article. (I?m sure the sorry state of the economy didn?t help things.)

Part II of this article will focus on Marketing, specifically: looking for markets, how to qualify a lead, composing a ?Flexible? cover letter & resume so it can be easily ?customized? and targeted, and qualifying responses.

Part III will focus on Sales, specifically: Developing targeted sales pitches, First contact, dealing with Recruiters & HR, Phone screens, Interviewing, and Negotiating offers.

Parts II and III will be published in the coming weeks, so stay tuned?..

One last thing: this article deals exclusively with conducting an online job search, there is an obvious missing piece here, and that piece is the importance of ?Networking?. Unfortunately I don?t consider myself an authoritative subject matter expert on Networking. I am simply not going to give out advice that I feel is unproven, and for that reason I won?t be writing about it.
