Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...
Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.
The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.
What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.
That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.
Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.
The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.
Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.
The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

REAL ESTATE: Foreclosure review filing deadline is Dec. 31 ... - blog
Posted on | December 29, 2012 |
This is it, the last call.
Borrowers who believe they suffered financial harm because of errors over foreclosure action taken against them in 2009 and 2010 by any one of 27 banks or mortgage servicers have until Monday, Dec. 31, to submit a form to request a free, independent review of what happened.
If the Independent Foreclosure Review shows missteps, compensation or remediation may be awarded to the borrower in the form of a lump-sum payment, suspension or rescission of a foreclosure, a loan modification or loss mitigation help, correction of credit reports and deficiency records.
Payments can range from $500 to $125,000, plus equity, for the most egregious cases.
Since April 2011 when enforcement actions were taken by the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the deadline for eligible borrowers to apply for this review was extended from April 30 to Dec. 31 by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
The Federal Reserve imposed the extensions to encourage as much participation as possible.
More than 4.4 million people had a foreclosure filing over those two years by one of the 27 firms ? 14 banks and 13 of their subsidiaries ? over the two years. Letters were mailed to alert consumers of potential errors due to such tactics as ?robo-signing.?
Yet, only 5 percent of the potential beneficiaries sought a review before the extension was announced.
Critics claimed the letters were too obscure or too technical for consumers to understand; others accused the federal agencies of flying the Independent Foreclosure Review program under the radar to protect banks.
Even now, the number for filers is slim.
As of Dec. 19, a Federal Reserve spokeswoman said there were 405,262 homeowners or former homeowners across the United States who filed for a review.
As of Sept. 27, only 234,323 requests had been made for a review. Of 769,593 California borrowers who could be affected ? 78,222 in Riverside County and 62,643 in San Bernardino County ? only 42,402 requests had been made.
In the two-county region, only 4,343 requests had been made by Riverside County based borrowers and only 3,661 had been made by San Bernardino County based borrowers as of Sept. 27, according to the OCC.
Rose Mayes, executive director of Riverside Fair Housing Council, said she thinks the low response was due to a lack of awareness on the part of homeowners about the review process and a strong view by homeowners who?d lost their homes to move on.
?A lot of people either didn?t know they might be eligible for those funds, or, went on there way and tried to put that behind them.?
Others say they were afraid their request for a review would preclude them from taking other actions related to their foreclosures.
That?s not so: A servicer is not permitted to require a borrower to sign a waiver of the borrower?s ability to pursue claims against the servicer in order to receive compensation under the Independent Foreclosure Review.
So what?s the take-out from this?
There?s still time to apply for this no-cost review: More information, including how to apply online, is available at http://www.independentforeclosurereview.com
The official Independent Foreclosure Review website has produced a bilingual video detailing the program.
Here are some more particulars on the process, and a link offering answers to frequently asked questions:
Borrowers are eligible for an independent foreclosure review if they meet this criteria:
1. The property securing the loan was the borrower?s primary residence.
2. The mortgage was in the foreclosure process ? initiated, pending or completed ? between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010.
3. The mortgage was serviced by any one of the following: America?s Servicing Co., Aurora Loan Services, BAC Home Loans Servicing, Bank of America, Beneficial, Chase, Citibank, CitiFinancial, CitiMortgage, Countrywide, EMC Mortgage Corp., EverBank/EverHome Mortgage, Financial Freedom, GMAC Mortgage, HFC, HSBC, IndyMac Mortgage Services, MetLife Bank, National City Mortgage, PNC Mortgage, Sovereign Bank, SunTrust Mortgage, U.S. Bank, Wachovia Mortgage, Washington Mutual, Wells Fargo Bank, Wilshire Credit Corp.
If you previously filed a complaint with these servicers about foreclosures pending during the review period, you may still seek an independent review of your foreclosure. There are no costs associated with being included in the review; the review is a free program. Beware of anyone who wants payment to assist you in connection with the independent foreclosure review or any other foreclosure assistance program.
Letters were mailed out to potentially eligible borrowers in November and December 2011. If you believe you meet the criteria, but did not get a letter, call 888-952-9105 on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) and Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (ET)

Its Quick And Easy To Get A New Glass Screen For Your iPhone
Patrick is an avid blogger who researches and writes on a wide variety of topics including technology, law, sports, health, business and whatever catches his interests.
View all articles by Patrick Thompson iPhone users across the board will agree that separation from the phone is not an option, no matter how short the separation is. After dropping your iPhone on the pavement or some other hard surface, we get one of those disparaging OMG moments. After that one single moment, it is almost as if life around us is non- existent. Panic begins to set in because we fear that the phone is beyond repair. This high end piece of technology does have weak points especially if not handled with the utmost care. If you are the owner of an iPhone and are looking for a way to continue living the life you have become accustomed to before your screen was shattered, rest easy because there are ways to make the repair and continue your lifestyle. You will first need to determine if the phone is still operating. If you are still able to see apps on your phone, still able to swipe from page to page or make a phone call, the damage is not as bad as it might seem. It will only take an hour of your time, including reading the directions, to make the repair yourself. There is a kit that you can purchase that has everything you need included and with detailed instructions on how to make the repair. The biggest challenge is removing the glass from the frame. With the assistance of a suction cup, this procedure should only take less than 20 minutes.
Once the cracked screen has been removed, the replacement screen is ready to be put into place. The next step is to make sure the surface of the frame where the replacement glass will
go is clean. Included in the kit is some double side tape that should be placed at the top of the frame and at the opposite end where the home button is. To ensure that the glass lies flat, press the tape down and make sure there are no air bubbles underneath. Replace the frame and restoration of your iPhone is complete.
Now, if the screen is damaged and swiping is no longer possible or none of the apps are working, there is a bigger problem. Not to worry though, the phone is not beyond repair. When this problem exists, the glass screen and digitizer will need to be replaced. Stay calm, because there is also a kit available for this type of repair, along with step-by-step instructions. The procedure for replacing the screen and digitizer is a little more tedious, but it can be done.
The beginning process of removing the glass is the same, but removing the digitizer is somewhat complicated to do. There are three connections that need to be delicately unplugged. If you are technologically challenged, it might be wise to have a repair shop do the repair for you. Breathe easy though, because the process is not a long one so the wait time should not be too long. Be mindful of the fact that once you remove the screws from the phone and take it apart, any warranty you have is no longer valid.

'Star of Wonder' leaves lots to wonder about
Clay Frost / NBC News
The leading explanation for the blblical "Star of Wonder" is that the Three Wise Men saw a series of planetary conjunctions. Click on the image to launch a Flash interactive about the astronomical side of the Nativity story.
By Alan Boyle
The Star of Bethlehem is one of the best-known parts of the Christmas story, celebrated in the Gospel of Matthew as well in as a constellation of holiday songs. It was that star that led the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus ??at least if you believe the Bible. But is there anything in the astronomical record that supports the story of the "Star of Wonder"?
The answer is, maybe. The case of the Christmas Star illustrates how slippery things can get when you try to mix scripture and science.
First of all, there's no way to show a definitive connection between any astronomical phenomenon and the tale of the Nativity. On one hand, you could just say that the star was a miraculous apparition. In that case, no further evidence would be needed. On the other hand, you could say that the whole Nativity story, including the part about the Three Wise Men, is fictional. In that case, trying to find the Christmas Star would be as fruitless as trying to determine the real-life location of Dumbledore's tomb in the "Harry Potter" saga.
But if you go along with the astronomers who have looked into the likeliest scenarios to explain Matthew's references to the Christmas Star, the line of reasoning takes some surprising twists: The star could have been a series of planetary conjunctions, or a comet, or perhaps a nova. These events didn't occur during the year A.D. 1, which most people assume was the year Jesus was born. Instead, they occurred at least a couple of years earlier. They also didn't occur anywhere close to Dec. 25.
And here's what might be the most surprising twist: All this meshes with the views generally held by scriptural scholars.
Matthew's story tells of "wise men from the east" ??who were actually priestly astrologers. What they saw in their astronomical calculations led them to alert Judea's king, Herod the Great, to the birth of the "king of the Jews." Herod told the astrologers to look for the infant in Bethlehem and let him know what they found. Matthew says they came upon the infant Jesus, but were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
Historical accounts?suggest that Herod died around the 4 B.C. ? although some scholars suggest the date could have been as early as 5 B.C. or as late as 1 B.C. Using this time frame, astronomers have checked the historical records and run computer simulations of the night sky?? and they've come up with these leading candidates for the Christmas Star:
Planets:?The simulations show that there was a rare series of planetary groupings, or conjunctions, in 3 B.C. and 2 B.C. The first conjunction was on the morning of June 12 in 3 B.C., with Venus close to Saturn in the eastern sky. The second conjunction was a spectacular pairing of Venus and Jupiter on Aug. 12 in the constellation Leo, which ancient astrologers associated with the destiny of the Jews.
Between September of 3 B.C. and June of 2 B.C., Jupiter would have passed by the star Regulus in Leo, reversed itself and passed it again, then turned back and passed the star a third time. This reversal was due to the planet's apparent retrograde motion?? a phenomenon familiar to the astrologers but not necessarily noticed by the casual observer. In his book on the Christmas Star, astronomer John Mosley says this would have been a significant event, because ancient astrologers considered Jupiter the kingly planet and regarded Regulus as the "king star."
The crowning touch came on June 17 of 2 B.C., when Jupiter was so close to Venus that "they would have looked like a single star," Mosley said. His scenario implies that the climax of the Nativity story came in the spring of 2 B.C.
There's a problem with this scenario, however: It doesn't work if Herod died in 4 B.C. An astronomer at the University of Sheffield, David Hughes, has proposed a different series of planetary conjunctions in 7 B.C. This was a triple conjunction, in which Jupiter and Saturn would appear to approach each other three times between May and December. "Events indicate that Jesus Christ was probably born in the autumn of that year, around October, 7 B.C.," Hughes wrote in a?paper published by the journal Nature.?
Comet: Other astronomers have considered the idea that the "star" was actually a comet. The likeliest candidate would be a comet recorded by Chinese astronomers in the year 5 B.C., in the constellation Capricorn or Aquila. Comet Halley would have been visible in 11 B.C., and the record suggests that other comets might have been seen in the time frame between those two dates.?"The snag is that they're not that rare,"?Hughes told the BBC. "They were also commonly associated with the 'four Ds' ? doom, death, disease and disaster. So if it did contain a message, it would have been a bad omen."?
Nova or supernova:?The Chinese were particularly good at chronicling supernovae, and the fact that none was recorded during the time frame in question has led most astronomers to discount a supernova as the explanation for the Christmas Star. However, astronomer Mark Kidger argues in his book, "The Star of Bethlehem," that the comet seen by the Chinese in 5 B.C. was actually a nova?? that is, a suddenly brightening star. The temporary brightening may not have caused a worldwide marvel, but if it came after a series of planetary conjunctions, it could have been enough of a signal to send the wise men on their way.
Kidger's scenario calls for the climax of the Christmas Star story to come in March of 5 B.C., after months of buildup. He even names his candidate for the Christmas Star: DO Aquilae, which is just faintly visible today.
What scholars say:?None of these scenarios would be consistent with Western Christianity's traditional schedule for the Christmas season, which calls for the "12 Days of Christmas" to begin on Dec. 25 and wind up with the arrival of the Three Kings on Epiphany, Jan. 6. However, scriptural scholars have pointed out that none of the Gospels refers to the date of Jesus' birth. In fact, the Gospel of Luke?s account about shepherds being out in their fields might make more sense if the birth occurred during the spring lambing season.
So how did Dec. 25, A.D. 1, get set as Jesus' birthdate? The current counting system for years (A.D. and B.C.) was set up in the sixth century by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus, who combined his reading of scripture, Roman history and end-of-the-world numerology to pick Year 1. Scriptural scholars now agree, however, that the timing of the Nativity story would make more sense if the birth occurred earlier than that?? because of the timing of Herod's death as well as a better understanding of the chronology for Roman emperors and governors.
As for the December date: Scholars say that the early Christian church wasn't all that interested in marking the day of Jesus' birth. For example, a 3rd-century theologian named Origen mocked the Romans for making such a big deal over divine birthdays.
Around the year 200, Clement of Alexandria noted that the favored dates for the birth were in the March-April-May time frame ? which would be consistent with the astronomical scenarios for the Christmas star.
It wasn't until the mid-4th century that Dec. 25 started showing up in church literature. The conventional wisdom is that Christmas was set in December after Constantine the Great's conversion to Christianity in 312, to bring the Christian holiday into line with?pagan celebrations of the solstice. But Andrew McGowan, warden and president of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne in Australia, argues in favor of an alternate explanation: that church leaders wanted to link their date for Jesus' conception with the presumed date of his death, on March 25. If you add nine months to March 25, you get Dec. 25 as the date of birth.
"Connecting Jesus' conception and death in this way will certainly seem odd to modern readers, but it reflects ancient and medieval understandings of the whole of salvation being bound up together," McGowan writes in this month's essay for Bible History Today.
The tale of Christmas and the Star of Wonder shows how astronomy and numerology can get tangled up with religion. But we're familiar with that, right? After all, we've just been through the apocalyptic angst surrounding the turnover of the Maya Long Count calendar. Fortunately, this week's turn of the calendar has a much more positive spin. So here's wishing you a wonderful holiday season of your choice ? whether it celebrates?Christmas or the solstice, the new year on the Gregorian calendar, or the new baktun for the Maya.

Hugo Chavez Cancer Surgery: Bolivia's President Evo Morales
HAVANA ? Bolivian President Evo Morales made a lightning trip this weekend to Havana where ally Hugo Chavez is convalescing after cancer surgery, but was mostly silent Monday on the details of his trip or even whether he met with the ailing Venezuelan leader.
The secrecy surrounding his visit was sure to add to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition, despite reassurances Monday from Venezuelan officials that the president was slowly improving.
The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since his Dec. 11 surgery. Venezuelan officials have given few specifics about his condition and have offered no information about his long-term prognosis.
Luis Vicente Leon, a pollster who heads the Venezuelan firm Datanalisis, said the government's daily but vague updates on the president's health seem designed to calm anxious Chavez supporters rather than keep the country fully informed. For government opponents, however, he said the updates likely raise more questions than they answer.
"It's more for the Chavez movement than the country in general," Leon said. "There's nothing that one can verify, and the credibility is almost nil."
Morales did not speak to the foreign media while in Havana. Journalists had been summoned to cover his arrival and departure, but hours later that invitation was canceled. No explanation was given, though it could have been due to confusion over Morales' itinerary as he apparently arrived later than initially scheduled.
Cuban state media published photos of President Raul Castro receiving Morales at the airport and said he came "to express his support" for Chavez, his close ally, but did not give further details.
At an event in southern Bolivia on Monday, Morales made no mention of his trip to Cuba, even though aides had told reporters that he might say something about Chavez's recovery. Later, Morales' communications minister did not respond directly to a question about whether the two South American presidents had met face-to-face, saying only that he "was with the people he wanted to be with" and had no plans to return to Cuba.
"The report that President Morales has given us is that Chavez is in a process of recovery after the terrible operation he underwent," Amanda Davila told The Associated Press.
Morales is the second Latin American leader to visit since Chavez announced two weeks ago that he would have the operation. Rafael Correa of Ecuador came calling the day of the surgery. Uruguay's Jose Mujica has expressed interest in making the trek.
The visits underscore Chavez's importance to regional allies as a prominent voice of the Latin American left, as well as how seriously they are taking his latest bout with cancer.
Chavez underwent his fourth cancer-related operation of the last year-and-a-half on Dec. 11, two months after winning reelection to a six-year term. Venezuelan officials say Chavez is stable and his recovery is progressing, though he was treated for a respiratory infection apparently due to the surgery.
If Chavez is unable to continue in office, the Venezuelan constitution calls for new elections to be held. Chavez has asked his followers to back his vice president and hand-picked successor, Nicolas Maduro, in that event.
In Caracas, Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas read a statement Monday saying that Chavez is showing "a slight improvement with a progressive trend," is keeping up with events back home and sends Christmas greetings to Venezuelans.
Maduro and several Cabinet ministers attended a Christmas Eve Mass in Caracas to pray for the president. Maduro again assured Venezuelans that the president was recovering, though he and other officials continued to strongly suggest that Chavez would not return in time for his Jan. 10 inauguration.
Opposition leaders have argued that the constitution does not allow the president's swearing-in to be postponed, and say new elections should be called if Chavez is unable to take the oath on time.
But Attorney General Cilia Flores insisted the constitution lets the Supreme Court administer the oath of office at any time if the National Assembly is unable to do it Jan. 10 as scheduled.
"Those who are counting on that date, hoping to thwart the Revolution and the will of the people, will end up frustrated once again," Flores said. "What we have is a president who has been re-elected, he will take over, will be sworn in on that day, another day, that is a formality."
Jaqueline Farias, the head of government for the Caracas area, told the AP outside the church that "we are very happy because each hour the `commandante' is showing signs that he is overcoming this phase of the operation, his fourth operation."
When asked if the president was breathing on his own, she said she didn't know and walked off, refusing to answer more questions.
Dozens of Chavez supporters gathered outside the church, some carrying posters of the president or wearing red T-shirts decorated with a photograph of just Chavez's eyes. Some women rushed to the church after seeing footage of the Mass on state television and yelled at security guards to let them inside.
"Chavez is going to be mad, if he sees this," said Andres Sanchez, an unemployed Chavez supporter watching a woman shouting at a guard that she wanted to pray for Chavez, too. "He told the ministers to talk to the people."
"Venezuela without Chavez is like a ship without a rudder," Sanchez said, his voice wobbling. "I pray to God that he recovers because he is a man who loves the people, the children, the elderly and everyone a little bit."

Wall Street ends lower after "fiscal cliff" setback
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks finished lower on Friday after a Republican plan to avoid the "fiscal cliff" failed to gain sufficient support on Thursday night, draining hopes that a deal would be reached before 2013.
Still, stocks managed to rebound from the day's lows near the end of the session, and for the week, the three major U.S. stock indexes still ended higher, with the S&P 500 gaining 1.2 percent.
Trading was volatile because of waning confidence in the prospect of a deal out of Washington, and in part, as the result of the quarterly expiration of options and futures contracts. The CBOE Volatility Index <.vix> or VIX, the market's favorite barometer of investor anxiety, finished below its session high.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner failed to garner enough votes from even his own party to pass his "Plan B" tax bill late on Thursday. It was the latest setback in negotiations to avoid $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts that some say could tip the U.S. economy into recession.
"The failure with Plan B was disappointing, if not terribly surprising, but now there's a real lack of clarity about what will happen, and markets hate that," said Mike Hennessy, managing director of investments for Morgan Creek in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 120.88 points, or 0.91 percent, to 13,190.84 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> fell 13.54 points, or 0.94 percent, to 1,430.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> lost 29.38 points, or 0.96 percent, to 3,021.01.
"Amazingly, this sharp decline today may not actually change the technical picture much - unless the decline gets worse," said Larry McMillan, president of options research firm McMillan Analysis Corp, in a research note.
For the week, the Dow gained 0.4 percent and the Nasdaq climbed 1.7 percent.
On Friday, Herbalife
Plan B, which called for tax increases on those who earn $1 million or more a year, was not going to pass the Democratic-led Senate or win acceptance from the White House anyway. But it exposed the reality that it will be difficult to get Republican support for the more expansive tax increases that President Barack Obama has urged.
Still, the declines of about 1 percent in the three major U.S. stock indexes suggest that investors do not believe the economy will be unduly damaged by the absence of a deal, said Mark Lehmann, president of JMP Securities, in San Francisco.
"You could have easily woken up today and seen the market down 300 or 400 points, and everyone would have said, 'That's telling you this is really dire,'" Lehmann said.
"I think if you get into mid-January and (the talks) keep going like this, you get worried, but I don't think we're going to get there."
Banking shares, which outperform during economic expansion and have led the market on signs of progress on resolving the fiscal impasse, led Friday's declines. Citigroup Inc
Volatility on Friday was exacerbated in part by "quadruple witching," the quarterly expiration of stock index futures and options, stock options and single stock futures contracts.
About 8.59 billion shares changed hands on major U.S. exchanges, more than the daily average of 6.47 billion daily in 2012, in part because of the "quadruple witching" expiration.
The day's round of data indicated the economy was surprisingly resilient in November; consumer spending rose by the most in three years and a gauge of business investment jumped.
But separate data showed consumer sentiment slumped in December. The S&P Retail Index <.spxrt> fell 1.2 percent.

Still not king of the Hill: In his first term, Obama never learned how to manage Congress
By Walter Shapiro
Being president is a daily, even hourly, character test. Every decision from approving a drone attack in Yemen to framing the State of the Union address is fraught with real-world consequences that can shape a president?s legacy.
Of course, political survival plays a role in these calculations. That is why the six weeks since the election are so potentially revealing about Barack Obama, who remains the most guarded and emotionally remote modern president. For the first time since he ran for the Illinois state Senate in 1996, Obama does not have to worry about the short-term verdict of the voters.??
Since his definitive re-election, the president has summoned poetry from despair in his prayerful speech at the Sandy Hook memorial. But Obama also allowed Susan Rice, his presumed choice for secretary of state, to step aside in the face of trumped-up Republican attacks over Benghazi. And, in what appears to have been a futile effort to placate John Boehner, the president this week voluntarily abandoned a position on taxes that he had upheld in virtually every speech during the 2012 campaign.
Until the moment Obama leaves office in 2017, all assessments of his character as a leader are tentative, works in progress subject to revision in light of new developments. But with that sense of humility in mind, here is what we have learned about Obama since the election:
Guns: At his Wednesday press conference, Obama took umbrage at the accurate suggestion that he had been AWOL on the subject of gun violence before 20 children died in Newtown. ?I?ve been president of the United States dealing with the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, an auto industry on the verge of collapse [and] two wars,? Obama said defensively. ?I don?t think I?ve been on vacation.?
External events often dictate a president?s priorities, so Obama did not need to invoke Afghanistan and Iraq to justify his prior lack of interest in renewing the assault-weapons ban. But now that the president has pledged that gun legislation will be a centerpiece of his State of the Union address next month, Obama should be held to a higher standard.
Dating back to the 2009 stimulus bill and health care reform, the standard Obama approach to Capitol Hill has been to stand aloof from the legislative details and the backroom bargaining over final wording. But as Joe Biden should know from the 1994 crime bill (which included an ineffective assault-weapons ban), a hands-off approach by the White House does not work with gun legislation. Without active presidential leadership, any gun bill that passes Congress will have NRA-engineered loopholes wide enough to drive an armored truck through.
To govern is to choose. And in the tear-stained aftermath of the Connecticut massacre, Obama appears to have placed a higher legislative priority on guns than immigration reform. It may well be a morally and politically defensible choice, especially if Obama is correct in sensing that this is a once-a-generation moment to lessen gun violence.
But that cause requires an activist LBJ-style president willing to exert unrelenting pressure on Congress rather than the familiar conflict-averse Obama searching for a non-existent consensus. Within the tight limitations imposed by the Supreme Court, it will be difficult to pass federal legislation that both significantly reduces gun deaths and survives constitutional scrutiny.
That is the character test awaiting Obama over guns: The president has a choice between a protracted and debilitating legislative crusade on Capitol Hill or the empty symbolism of a toothless bill that does little to prevent the next school shooting.
National Security: Obama?s second-term national security team could well be dominated by two former senators and Vietnam veterans?John Kerry, who the president just nominated as secretary of state, and, if the rumors are true, Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon.
What this may suggest is that Obama has made a conscious decision to reflect America?s war weariness in his top appointments. Both Kerry and Hagel?along with Biden, of course?understand how an unpopular war can derail even the most successful two-term president. It is even possible to interpret both the Kerry pick and potential Hagel nomination as an indication that Obama intends to resist any hair-trigger response to Iran?s nuclear weapons program or other flash-point crisis.
But it is equally likely that, after the furor over Rice, Obama is simply taking the easy path?picking nominees who will sail through Senate confirmation because of their Capitol Hill pedigrees. (A scurrilous attack on Hagel as anti-Israel, orchestrated by Weekly Standard editor and Iraq War cheerleader Bill Kristol, has aroused a fierce counter-reaction).
That is the Obama enigma: How much is ideology and how much is conflict avoidance? With Kerry and Hagel, is the president reflecting a dovish, but pragmatic, outlook in foreign affairs? Or are these both make-no-waves choices picked because of factors that have little to do with their national-security orientation? Kerry, after all, was the only well-known alternative to Rice, and Hagel would be reprising the Robert Gates role as the token Republican at the senior level of the Obama Cabinet.
Taxes: In Iowa City in late May 2007, a fledgling presidential candidate named Obama unveiled his health-care plan. His proposed expansion of coverage would be paid for by (wait for it) ending the Bush tax cuts for those earning more than $250,000 a year. There was nothing magical about $250,000 other than, in political terms, it seemed to separate the wealthy from the upper middle class.
But through slavish repetition by Obama, that $250,000 figure seemed as unalterable as pi. In his mid-November press conference, Obama again talked passionately about the need ?to pass a law right now that would prevent any tax hike whatsoever on the first $250,000 of everyone?s income.?
After more than five-and-a-half years, that ironclad Obama position is now officially inoperative. The president?s budget offer to Boehner Monday raised that income threshold to $400,000. Since the House speaker could not even pass a bill raising taxes on those earning more than $1 million per year, there is a persistent sense that?once again?Obama has been rolled.
There is no overarching ideology here, since some compromise in the face of the ?fiscal cliff? has long been inevitable. But with Obama, there is always the question of where does political positioning end and bedrock principle begin?
During his 2011 budget talks with Boehner, Obama offered to gradually increase the age of eligibility for Medicare. The president subsequently abandoned that position, but he is now willing to accept a new inflation formula for Social Security that will, over time, slightly reduce benefits. The point is not that Medicare and Social Security should be off limits in all budget negotiations, but rather it comes back to the enduring mystery of precisely what does Obama believe.
During his re-election campaign, Obama remained elusively vague about his second-term plans. But the assumption was that?once free of political pressures?Obama would reveal his governing agenda. Now, it seems quite possible that even after the inaugural address next month, we will still be searching for the Rosetta Stone that deciphers Obama?s vision.

The Respawnables - a free, fun, run and gun
The Respawnables was enjoying a limited release in Canada leading up to its global roll-out this weekend. I?ve been playing for the last week or two, and have really enjoyed the third-person-shooter's cartoony style, straightforward controls, and rich selection of unlockables.
The controls are extremely simple and easy to to use. There?s a standard dual-joystick set-up, where the left-side joystick moves the player and panning anywhere on the right side changes the camera angle. The firing button can be moved while being held down to adjust aim, though there are two alternative controls schemes available in the options, including a Y axis inversion toggle and a sensitivity slider. Aside from that, the only other distractions are the reload and grenade buttons - no jump, no duck, no iron sights. For the third-person shooter style, this is perfectly fine, though there are on occasions where you'll be frustrated by very small ledges that seem like you should be able to hop over.
The single-player game is currently not much more than a three-minute deathmatch where players try to fulfill up to three challenges. There are longer-term achievements to earn as well. Of course, you also earn experience points and cash along the way, which allow you to kit out your character with new pants, tops, hairdos, perks, and weapons. Those first three might sound like complete vanity items, but not so - a little known fact of modern warfare is that a flat-top cut can actually improve your accuracy. There are also consumables, such as explosives and boosts to cash and experience point gain.
My only serious complaint about progression is that many of the unlockables are hidden behind the premium gold currency. It?s not that this isn?t unexpected (especially from a Zynga game), it?s just that the push towards in-app purchases is a little more steep than I would like. Some of the perks are unlocked exclusively through the premium currency, which give those that pay a decided advantage online. Many of the higher-powered pieces of equipment also require premium currency, with no option to buy them with the regularly-earned in-game cash.
It?s generally easy enough to find multiplayer games (despite my poor luck in the video). Even with the fairly simple controls, there?s a significant amount of challenge. Sniper rifles feel a tad on the overpowered side right now, though it?s still early in the game?s launch and I suspect plenty of tweaks will be made in short order. By the same token, I?m sure sooner than later we?ll see more than free-for-all and team battle game modes. One vital feature that The Respawnables will need to stay viable is social tools, even if they?re just Game Center plug-ins. Friending other players and chatting with them privately is hugely important to multiplayer gaming on mobile and elsewhere.
The visuals in The Respawnables are flawless. Players are exaggerated, animated, full of character and color, and despite the violent nature of the game, there?s no gore anywhere. On the audio side, I felt the sound effects were a little muffled and repetitive, but the music is top-notch and gets you right into the action movie feeling.
The good
- Simple, streamlined controls
- Tons of style
- Plenty of unlockables
The bad
- Aggressive push towards in-app purchases
- Lack of multiplayer game modes and friending options
The bottom line
The Respawnables is a colorful, accessible, action-packed romp. The simple controls, bright style, and wide array of unlockable items makes for a really enjoyable experience, though the balance feels a little too heavily tilted towards getting people to make in-app purchases. I trust that a wider range of items that you can buy with in-game cash rather than premium gold will make things a little bit easier (even if the cash item equivalents aren?t unlocked until later). I?m looking forward to more multiplayer game modes and social options once The Respawnables hits the U.S., but even until then, I?ve got a really nice laid-back alternative to Modern Combat 4.

Honduras congress passes law to purge police corruption
TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Honduras' congress passed a law on Tuesday to purge the police of corruption, a victory for the ruling party and President Porfirio Lobo after a recent conflict with the Central American country's highest court.
The law will require officers to undertake lie detector tests, drug screening and a probe of their personal wealth to determine if they can remain in the police force.
According to the United Nations, Honduras has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, with 86 murders for every 100,000 inhabitants.
This initiative was declared unconstitutional by four Supreme Court judges last month, prompting lawmakers to dismiss the justices and name their replacements on December 12.
Alfredo Saavedra, the head of the opposition Liberal Party, said the dismissal of the judges was "a blow to democracy" and that it undermined the independence of the court.
Lobo had accused the judges of attacking institutions amid his growing belief there is a conspiracy to remove him from office in a coup similar to the ouster of former President Manuel Zelaya in June 2009, which plunged the country into a political crisis for months.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had previously thrown out a tax on big companies and law aimed at attracting more foreign investment, deepening the dispute with Lobo and his party.

Gestures have timely impact
People think differently about the passage of time depending on the hand gestures someone else uses, Stanford psychologist Barbara Tversky reported on November 17. In a series of experiments, Tversky?s colleague Azadeh Jamalian of Columbia University asked volunteers to diagram progressions of familiar events. While describing these tasks, Jamalian gestured in a straight horizontal line, gestured in a circle or made no gestures. Most individuals drew linear diagrams after seeing linear gestures and circular diagrams after seeing circular gestures. Linear diagrams predominated if no gestures were used, probably because people tend to conceive of time as running on a line, Tversky said. Gestures can subtly alter the notion of how time proceeds, she proposed.
Memory athletes flex mind power
Top competitors in memory competitions aren?t one-trick ponies. Four of the most accomplished memory athletes, including the top-ranked master of recall, scored much higher than groups of college students on a variety of memory and attention tests, psychologist Henry Roediger III of Washington University in St. Louis said on November 17. Memory competitors scored extraordinarily well on tests of list memory, recall of specific numbers from equations that had been mentally solved, and attention control during attempted distractions. Memory athletes use well-known recall strategies on specific challenges, such as remembering hundreds of rapidly presented numbers, but these people possess much broader mental prowess than that, Roediger suggested. It?s not known whether recall gurus start out with super memory and attention or gain those skills through practice.
Humans expect hidden treasures to be clustered in space
Adults and children hide valuables in clumps to make them easy for collaborators to find but scatter goodies widely when hiding them from competitors, psychologist Andreas Wilke of Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., reported November 16. Humans evolved to expect that food and other resources appear in patches, Wilke theorizes (SN: 2/12/11, p. 26). In one test, 5- to 8-year-olds hid 20 marbles among 100 boxes on a playground after being told to make it either hard or easy for others to find the toys. Adults did the same in a computer game in which they hid $1 tokens in a grid of 100 squares. In both games, hiders clustered objects if they wanted them easily found.

Sandy Hook school shooting: Few easy answers for a violent culture (+video)
Adam Lanza, a troubled 'genius,' reportedly shot and killed 20 elementary school pupils and seven adults, including his mother, before killing himself in Newtown, Conn., on Friday. The national tragedy has sparked a search for ways to stop a senseless streak of mass killings.
By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / December 15, 2012
EnlargeNew details in the Newtown, Conn., school massacre suggest that the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, may have suffered from autism or a personality disorder and also had easy access to high-powered weapons ? a combination of unique circumstances that may complicate President Obama's call for broad "meaningful action" in the wake of a national tragedy.

The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday pose many difficult questions about American views toward mental health problems among disaffected young men as well as possible impacts of a violent media and gun culture.
But the tragic events, experts say, also offer a unique opportunity for America to reassess its values and culture without getting bogged down by politics ? a development that could yield possible solutions to a streak of mass shootings this year that have ended with a total of 65 Americans ? including, now, 20 school children ? losing their lives in swirls of high-powered gun fire, primarily with young, intelligent and disinhibited men behind the triggers.
"Clearly, this is a young man who was very, very angry and willing to express his anger in almost unthinkable ways," says James Cassidy, a criminal justice professor at the University of New Haven. "But I think we do also have to look at ourselves here. Yes, it's unclear ? what factors were the most prevalent, but certainly the fact that we have a mental health system that is failing right now plays a role. We're also coming to understand that while violence on TV, in movies and in lyrics haven't led to more crime, it does appear that a certain faction of society is vulnerable to such violence, that it disinhibits them in some way."
The Monitor's View:?Newtown shootings: What to say to ourselves
Police say Mr. Lanza, a former honor roll student known to carry a black briefcase to class, killed his mother and then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he forced his way into the school.
Once inside, he killed 20 children, six adults, and finally himself in a hail of rapid gun fire that took place, police say, in two separate areas of the school, including a classroom. The three guns found by police ? two semiautomatic pistols, a Glock and a Sig Sauer and an assault-style Bushmaster rifle ? were registered to Lanza's mother.
Coming 10 days before Christmas and becoming the seventh major mass shooting of the year, the coldblooded and senseless brutality of the Sandy Hook massacre shook Americans to their core. President Obama wiped away tears and had to collect himself as he addressed the nation Friday afternoon, saying Americans have to take "meaningful action" to thwart such senseless violence.
It won't be an easy task, given the country's fiscal situation and reticence to tinker with hard-fought gun rights.
Bottom line: It's difficult to "figure [mass shootings] out and try to predict [them] without trampling on the Constitution and certain inalienable rights guaranteed when this country was developed," says Scott Belshaw, a criminal justice professor at the University of North Texas, in Denton.
To be sure, gun control advocates, having largely lost the legal arguments in the wake of major court decisions affirming Second Amendment rights to own and carry guns for self-defense, are now primed to push forward new gun control legislation. Since the sun-setting of the assault weapons ban in 2004, Congress has shored up state reporting of gun purchases, but has not passed any major gun control law.
